Defensive Driving in Indian Traffic: 7 Habits That Save Lives

Defensive driving isn’t just about following rules; it is about anticipating the mistakes of other road users. Master these critical defensive habits today.

Defensive Driving in Indian Traffic: 7 Habits That Save Lives

Driving defensively means protecting yourself and your passengers by proactively predicting hazards before they unfold. On bustling roads where unexpected lane shifts, stray animals, and rapid two-wheelers are common, defensive driving is an indispensable life skill.

1. Maintain the 3-Second Following Distance

In standard city traffic, keep at least a 3-second buffer behind the vehicle in front of you. When trailing commercial trucks or buses, expand this to 4-5 seconds to ensure adequate braking reaction distance.

2. The "Tire on Tarmac" Stop Rule

When stopping behind another car at a traffic light, always ensure you can clearly see the bottom of their rear tires touching the asphalt. This prevents rear-ending them if bumped from behind, and leaves you room to steer around if they break down.

3. Expect the Unexpected at Intersections

Never accelerate aggressively on a green light without glancing left and right first. Many collisions occur when hasty drivers attempt to beat yellow lights.

4. Scan 15 Seconds Ahead

Do not fixate on the bumper directly ahead of you. Keep your vision scanning 100 to 200 meters down the road to spot brake lights, lane closures, and pedestrians early.

5. Always Signal Intent, Not Just Action

Turn indicators are a communication tool. Activate them 3-5 seconds before initiating a turn or lane change to give vehicles in your blind spots time to react.

6. Stay Out of Heavy Vehicle Blind Spots

Large lorries and buses have extensive blind zones ("No Zones") directly behind, immediately in front, and across their left flank. If you cannot see the driver’s side mirror, they cannot see you!

7. Control Your Temper and Practice Courtesy

Road rage impairs decision-making. If an aggressive driver cuts you off, yield space, take a breath, and focus on arriving safely at your destination.
